Upon arriving in New Haven, I found that the only material connection with my past was Chinese food, and an artist with whom I sought kinship was Noguchi due to his similar background and circumstances. In my research of Noguchi, I found an East Asian art sensibility blended with high modernism. Like many Asian American stories, and like that of Chinese food overseas, there was a complex negotiation between adaptation, assimilation, and even self-exoticization.
As part of creating this piece, I broke and rejoined the parts using an adhesive paste made from instant noodles and superglue according to a meme from China. It has since broken many times, and I keep fixing it adding layers of repair.
